Follow your local Buddhist host around the ancient Kingdom of Anuradhapura on quiet cycling trails away from the crowds. Your host is passionate about avoiding over-tourism and offering an authentic insight into Sri Lankan heritage. Work your way in towards the center of these UNESCO-protected ruins, passing paddy fields, crumbling jungle-enveloped structures and ancient irrigation systems until you reach the main city relics. Highlights include soaring stupas, the Elephant Pond and the centuries-old sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree that symbolises the introduction of Buddhist in Sri Lanka.

From vast freshwater tanks to jungle-shrouded structures, the City of Anuradhapura complex includes many ancient gems. Your host will bring to life the historical significance of this site through story, connecting centuries-old sites with the island’s present-day culture. Especially noteworthy relics include the Abhayagiri Dagoba that was the largest Buddhist monument in the world at the time it was built, and the ancient sacred Bodhi tree where local Buddhists and monks come for prayer.

Begin in the village home of a local Buddhist family to prepare your Almsgiving gift. The food you’ll make will be based on traditional recipes crafted using techniques dating back generations. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about authentic Sri Lankan cuisine and cooking methods. Following this, journey to the temple in Habarana to present your offering to the monks and learn about the teachings of Sri Lankan Buddhism and the day-to-day life of a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk. End the experience with lunch by the lake served to you on a traditional nelum Koley (lotus leaf).
