Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Anuradhapura
Upon your arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be greeted by a driver/guide from SaCeylon. After completing the necessary formalities, you'll be transferred to Anuradhapura, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka. Settle into your accommodation and prepare for the historical exploration ahead.
Day 2: Explore Anuradhapura and Transfer to Jaffna
Start your day with a visit to Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient ruins and historical significance as the first kingdom of Sri Lanka. Key sites include the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, ancient stupas like Ruwanwelisaya, and the Abhayagiri Monastery. After immersing yourself in Anuradhapura's rich history, proceed to Jaffna, located in the northern part of the island.
Day 3: City Tour of Jaffna
Explore Jaffna, a city rich in cultural and historical heritage. Visit the famous Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, known for its vibrant architecture and religious significance. Explore the remains of the 17th-century Dutch Fort, the Jaffna Library with its extensive collection, and the bustling local markets. In the afternoon, relax at Casuarina Beach, known for its scenic beauty and tranquil environment.
Day 4: Naga Vihara Temple and Historical Sites
Embark on a unique journey to the Naga Vihara Temple, located on an island near Jaffna. The visit involves a short boat ride to reach the temple. In the afternoon, explore the Kantharodai Temple, famous for its pre-historic tombs, and the Keerimalee Temple with its sacred pond. Visit Dambakolapatuna, an important historical site where a sapling from the Sacred Bodhi Tree in India was brought to Sri Lanka.
Day 5: Transfer to Trincomalee
Travel to Trincomalee, a renowned beach destination on Sri Lanka’s east coast. En route, stop to visit significant war sites from the civil conflict in the northern and eastern regions. Upon arrival in Trincomalee, settle into your beachside accommodation and relax.
Day 6 – 9: Beach Stay in Trincomalee
Enjoy a leisurely beach stay in Trincomalee over the next four days. The area is known for its stunning beaches, such as Nilaveli and Uppuveli. Explore Trincomalee city, including Fort Frederick—a 17th-century Dutch fort, the Koneshwaram Hindu Temple located within the fort, and the Hot Springs in Kanniya. Optional activities include whale watching, diving, and boat rides to Pigeon Island Sanctuary (additional costs apply).
Day 10: Transfer to Habarana and Visit Sigiriya
Transfer to Habarana in the cultural heartland of Sri Lanka. In the afternoon, visit the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb this ancient rock citadel to marvel at its impressive frescoes, royal gardens, and panoramic views from the summit.
Day 11: Explore Polonnaruwa and Minneriya Safari
Travel to Polonnaruwa, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its well-preserved ruins and historical significance as a former royal capital. Explore key sites such as the Royal Palace, Gal Vihara, and Parakrama Samudra. In the afternoon, enjoy a jeep safari at Minneriya National Park, famous for its large elephant herds and diverse wildlife.
Day 12: Transfer to Kandy with Enroute Visits
Journey to Kandy, a UNESCO World Heritage City. On the way, stop at a spice garden in Matale, where you can learn about Sri Lanka’s spice cultivation and sample various spices. In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism’s most venerated sites, housing a relic of the Buddha’s tooth.
Day 12: Departure Transfer
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure. If time allows, you may take an optional Colombo City Walk with Mark Forbes, an expert in local food, culture, and history (subject to availability). Reflect on your enriching journey through Sri Lanka as you head to your next destination.
